How to Detangle 4C Hair: A Step by Step Guide

How many of us enjoy detangling our 4C natural hair? Although detangling 4C hair can sometimes feel like a daunting task, it can be done with the right approach.

In fact, it can be seen as a manageable and even enjoyable part of your hair care routine. Proper detangling is crucial for retaining length and keeping your hair healthy. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you through the process:

1. Prep for a Good Wash Day

I always recommend starting your detangling session before you wash your hair. This way, you can remove major tangles and knots beforehand, making the wash process smoother and preparing for the bigger task of cleansing and conditioning your hair. A little prep goes a long way!

2. Use the Right Products

Have a conditioner or a detangling product for your hair. Look for products with good slip—they’ll help whatever tools you use glide through your hair without causing breakage.

Oils like avocado or coconut oil re great choices for pre-poos. You can also use an actual pre-shampoo. My favorite is the African Pride Moisture Miracle Pre-Shampoo, which works amazing on my coily 4c natural hair. Lastly, keep water handy to make your hair more manageable and malleable during your detangling session.

3. Section Your Hair

Divide your hair into manageable sections. Four to eight sections usually work best for our 4C hair type due to the fragile nature of our strands. This allows you to focus on one area at a time and ensures you don’t miss any knots or tangles. Work smarter, not harder!

4. Start from the Ends

Begin detangling at the ends of your hair and work your way up to the roots. This method reduces breakage, as shedding is mostly found at the ends of our hair.

Tip: Make sure to detangle when you’re 100% in the state of mind to complete this process. Remember, patience is key!

5. Use the Right Tools

Your fingers are your best friends for gently detangling 4C hair and an essential skill to learn. It allows for a gentler approach, reducing breakage and giving you better control over knots and tangles.

However, if finger detangling is not your jam, a wide tooth comb works well too. You can also use coily specific brushes like the purple Tangle Teezer. I filmed a short video on Instagram on how I use my tangle teezer to detangle my hair. You can watch it here.

6. Be Patient and Gentle

Take your time and be gentle with your hair. Tugging and pulling can cause breakage and damage. If you encounter a tough knot, apply more conditioner or your product of choice and gently work it out with your fingers. Your hair deserves all the TLC!

7. Keep Your Hair Moisturized

After detangling, keep your hair moisturized to prevent future tangles. Use a leave-in conditioner, oil or a moisturizing cream to lock in hydration.

Moisturized hair is less susceptible to breakage, helping you retain length and keep your hair healthy. Moisture is your hair’s best friend!

By following these steps, detangling your 4C hair can become a smooth and manageable part of your hair care routine.

Happy Detangling!
